Frequently Asked Questions

1. What makes your services different from other similar companies?

Octane Media 3D's difference is in the attention we place on the directing and production of your virtual tour, photos and videos. Rather than taking random clips which are then fed through an automated system, which creates very simple slideshows, we take your video and photographic imagery, and engineer them with cinematic editing software, accompanied and thoughtfully synchronized to music.

Photography Techniques

2. How long does it take to take photos of my property?

On average, it would take about 90 minutes to photograph a standard 3,000 sq. ft. house with the Matterport 3D camera, followed by 30-45 minutes of drone photography if you have ordered it. This is not a firm number and depends on the complexity of the floor plan and property.

3. Can I be present while you are taking the pictures?

It is best if you remain clear of the area during the image capture. Please kindly plan to leave your home for 1 to 2 hours during the photography. And of course, we maintain the highest safety standards for flying our drones, so we ask you to remain clear of the area while it is in the air.

4. Will you move furniture or clean up my house before photography?

No. For efficiency, we request that you have your home staged and ready before our arrival. Please turn on all interior lights for the best results from the 3D camera. Open all blinds and curtains to allow the maximum amount of light into the room, and close any doors and that you do want to mapped if you have ordered a Matterport® virtual tour.

5. I've been hearing lots about how drones are illegal to fly now. Are your drones legal?

We have two different models of drones that we fly. The first, the DJI Mavic Air, is registered and flown in accordance with the Canadian Aviation Regulations Section IX, which sets rules for flying any unmanned aircraft weighing 250 grams or more. We are licensed UAS pilots (unmanned aerial system) for this class of aircraft. It is perfectly legal as long as it is flown clear of any airports or airspace.

For any properties that are located close to or under any airspace (i.e. Victoria International, Victoria Harbour, nearby heliports, etc.), we fly our DJI Mavic Mini, weighing in at just 249 grams and therefore does not require any special licensing or registration to fly. Both have similar stabilized gimbals and amazing high-quality cameras.

6. Do I get to see my videos and photos before they are posted?

Yes, of course! You will have the opportunity to preview the final products before they are published.

7. Are you licensed and insured to work in my home?

Absolutely. We have extensive liability insurance in place both for operation in your home and with our drones outside your home.
